Rules

Opening Category Rules

On BudgetBadger Business (web), open Rules from the main navigation, or create a rule from the Transactions page rules popup / row actions when reviewing a merchant.

Rules automatically assign a category when new synced transactions match your criteria (for example merchant contains a string, or amount equals a fixed value).

Creating and Editing Rules

Create a rule with match conditions (merchant, memo, amount, and related options shown in the form) and a target category. Edit or delete rules from the Rules list.

Start with a few high-confidence merchants (software subscriptions, contractors, rent) before building a large rule library. Test with Apply to Historical on a single rule when you want to see impact on past transactions.

Priority Order and Reordering

Rules run in priority order — higher rules win when more than one could match. Drag rows on the Rules page to reorder. Put more specific merchants above broad contains-rules so generic matches do not steal categorization.

Apply to Historical / Apply All

Use Apply to Historical on a single rule to recategorize past transactions that match. Use Apply All (when available) to run your full active rule set against history.

Review a sample of results afterward, especially around platform deposits and transfers. Applying rules does not recreate platform allocation splits — it updates ordinary categorization where rules are allowed to run.

How Rules Interact With Platform Splits

When a platform payout is matched, BudgetBadger creates child split lines owned by the platform integration. Those frozen children are not overridden by ordinary category rules or bulk recategorize.

To change how revenue vs fees are mapped, update split category preferences in the Integrations Manage modal for that platform — not category rules. If you manually edit a platform child category, the system typically freezes that line so later Sync Now does not overwrite your edit.
